Revolutionizing Beauty Spaces: Nanjing Hexi Beauty Hospital

Sheng Tao and Yi Zhang's Innovative Design Wins Silver A' Design Award

The design inspiration for the hospital came from the circle, which is considered the measurement scale of space. The designers embedded a semicircle art installation in the stainless steel ceiling, which through projection, transformed into a whole circle of different sizes and directions. This created a light floating feeling, blurring the boundaries between interior and architecture, and constructing a compound functional space where practical experience and aesthetic image could coexist.

What sets this design apart is the use of a method called the virtual space. The entire ceiling is made of stainless steel with a mirror surface. The images reflected in the mirror extend the space in an endless way, breaking away from the constraints of the building structure, and allowing the space to drift away in a dynamic illusion, projecting the rhythm of light and shadow.

The hospital, spanning 480 square meters, was realized using tempered glass, marble, latex paint, mirror stainless steel, and carpet. The undulating walls and the eight-meter-long front desk were all inlaid with intaglio decoration techniques to create a futuristic sense of sci-fi temperament. The mirrors and walls cast beautiful reflections with each other, leading to an image of water ripples, enhancing the artistic quality of the space.

The design team faced significant challenges due to the complex streamlines and support columns in the structure of the Nanjing international youth cultural centre, where the hospital is located. However, they successfully overcame these challenges, creating a space that is a perfect blend of art and aesthetics, reality and virtuality.

The Nanjing Hexi Beauty Hospital project started in October 2018 in Nanjing and was completed in April 2019. The design team's innovative approach and the hospital's unique design have been recognized with the Silver A' Design Award, a testament to their outstanding expertise and innovation.
